Suicide awareness

Taboo: Breaking down barriers  SOURCE:JUSTALEGRIA

THOUSANDS of people choose to end their only life every year in Spain, leaving behind family and friends and a life that may have been different had they been able to get the help they needed.

Since 2008, suicide has been the leading cause of unnatural death in Spain with five per cent of the population having suicidal thoughts throughout their life.

The World Health Organisation has estimated that for every person who succeeds in taking their life, there are 20 failed attempts.

For these reasons, the prevention of such catastrophic actions is considered to be one of the main challenges of the 21st Century and that is why associations like the Justalagria play a fundamental role in helping stop them.

Justalegría is an organisation based in Malaga that works on international development, coordination and humanitarian aid projects and on local projects for education and development of social action.

“Reason to Live” is an initiative that began in 2014 when it was uncovered that the number of suicides was on the increase and especially in young people.

The main objective of the projectis to make suicide visible as one of the main problems in society. As well as helping break taboos and involving necessary institutions it also aims to increase information allowing detection in vulnerable people and offering therapy that reduces the risks of these people.

Justalegría and this program aim to achieve something positive out of any bad situation and look to strengthen those affected and eliminate any probable cause for individuals to take their own precious life
