Woman killed by falling palm tree

A WOMAN has died and a young girl has been seriously injured after being struck by a tree in Palma.
The tragic event took place close to the Cathedral of Mallorca around 12pm on Sunday, when a palm tree gave way due to strong winds.
According to reports, the woman of Brazilian nationality, was in the area with her husband and 7-year-old daughter at the time. It was then that a strong gust of wind forced the top of the tree to fall, crushing the mother who sadly died at the scene.
Some branches also hit the young girl who suffered a severe anxiety attack upon seeing her mother lying on the floor. Both father and daughter were attended to by emergency personnel where the girl was taken to hospital.
High winds have caused damage across Mallorca, where in Puerto Andratx, fire crews were on call from the early hours of Sunday morning to deal with multiple fallen trees. Rough seas also caused many boats to be cast adrift and in Llucmajor, the Ma-6015 highway was closed.
Information from Aemet recorded gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour with emergency services issuing a level one risk alert on Sunday.
