Rust threatens Casa del Cable's columns

TELEGRAPH STATION: Only the columns remain  Photo credit: Joanbanjo

FOUR columns made from the local rough sandstone are all that remain of Javea’s original Casa del Cable.
The cable in question was a 113-kilometre undersea connection installed in 1860 to link Baleares to Spanish mainland but the telegraph station was practically abandoned as communications advanced.
The building was restored and inaugurated in 2007 as a municipal exhibition room but the columns are now threatened by rust from the building’s steel frame structure.
Town hall technicians are working to correct this, municipal sources revealed, and also solve the rust problem that has affected flagstones on the first floor.
