Fire charges for ‘Spanish Legion Commander’ on the Costa Blanca

A HOMELESS man who denies being responsible for 24 bin fires in Alicante city last week has been sent to a secure unit for psychiatric evaluation after a court heard that he claims to be a Commander in the Spanish Legion in charge of 800 men.

He has been charged with causing 16 of the fires, with an Alicante court being told the damage caused was worth €15,000.

When arrested he was carrying three lighters, inflammable material and smelt strongly of smoke, police say.

Investigations into the other fires continue.
