THE first snow of autumn was recorded on Sunday, falling on the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) confirmed that there was a light covering of snow down to 1,000m as temperatures in the Tramuntana fell to a chilly 2°C. There were also heavy hailstorms which left coverings that looked like snow, where in the mountains, almost 70 litres of rain per m2 were registered by midday. A spectacular blanket of hail also took the city of Palma by surprise, with many vehicles suffering violent blows. Aemet has signalled the arrival of the Bernardo storm to Mallorca, the second major blast of the season which has been activated by wind, high seas and rain. In social networks, users shared images of other parts of the island, such as the Port de Pollença, where many of its streets were covered with a white frosting of hail.
