EVICTION: Shops in the underground shopping centre of Plaza Mayor will have to vacate the municipal premises. Credit: Luna Marina.
PALMA City Council has ordered the eviction of several shops located in the underground shopping centre of Plaza Mayor. The council has initiated the process against 4 owners of the municipal premises after their lease came to an end in September. Pimeco, the association of small and medium sized businesses, has criticised the decision, asking that the council retracts its ruling which has acted “with little sensitivity towards small merchants in the area”. The Eroski supermarket is included in the eviction proceedings, which will result in the loss of around 20 jobs. In response to the judgement, Toni Fuster, the President of Pimeco, has asked that the supermarket remains open until there is an alternative option, as “it provides a basic service to the community and residents do not have any other shop of this type in the surrounding area”.
