ALICANTE’S provincial council, the Diputacion, has confirmed that Calpe will not have a New Year Concert on January 1.
Its budget cannot cover an event of this size, announced the Diputacion which previously collaborated with the concert but has had to settle a €91,910 unpaid bill run up by Cesar Sanchez, former Calpe mayor and ex-president of the Diputacion.
Undeterred, the present town hall is planning an entirely outdoor spectacle for December 31.
The evening will begin at 5pm with a mini-disco and games for children, who can see in their own New Year at 7pm, complete with 12 grapes as the clock strikes, followed by a magician and more disco.
Local group Trilogy will perform from 11pm until midnight and the grape-eating ritual, which will be followed by a disco with a set by DJ Jota at 2am.
