A JAVEA 15-year-old had a lucky escape after she fell five metres into a disused and empty water deposit. Although the plot of land in the Portitxol district where the deposit is located is fenced-off, the huge cistern’s raised top is a favourite meeting place for young people to hang out, enjoy the views over the bay, and chat. It has also been used for botellon outdoors drinking sessions. Not long ago, and for reasons yet to be determined, the girl, who was accompanied by friends, fell through a hatch into the deposit. Her friends contacted the emergency services but although at one point they explained that help was no longer needed, they called again when they realised that the girl could not get out unaided. Firemen who went to the scene used a ladder to reach the girl who was hoisted up in a harness. On reaching safety, she was found to be practically uninjured apart from a scratched arm.
