TEULADA-MORAIRA’S Animal Welfare department has now sterilised 62 stray cats living in different parts of the town. The cats were then released in the same areas where they were found, visa the Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) programme. The procedure is demonstrably effective in controlling populations of ownerless cats if all or the majority of cats that live in a colony are sterilised and then returned. Sterilising also helps to reduce the fighting, spraying and snarling associated with unneutered males, the animal welfare department said. The provincial council, the Diputacion, covered €3,000 of the €4,160 cost of neutering the cats which was carried out with the cooperation of three local vets.
