WORK has started on the archaeological excavation of a 12th Century Islamic tower in Guardamar del Segura. The town council is spending €14,000 on the project, which as well as uncovering the history of the site is intended to preserve the remains of the Moncayo site. Diggers will uncover the interior floor of the historic building, which is 10 x 7 sqm. In addition, it is planned to conduct several surveys in the vicinity to discover and document other archaeological remains. The work will be completed at the beginning of December. Councillor for historical heritage Pilar Gay stressed that the site of the Islamic tower represents “another point of great historical import for Guardamar and its region. “It is, in her opinion, a heritage value that makes this municipality “a great archaeological park” that the local council intends to investigate little by little and open up sites for visitors to view and enjoy
