THE underwater electric cable linking Menorca to Mallorca, Spain has been completed and is expected to be operational by the end of next year. The 41km cable, which weighs approximately 2,300 tonnes, lies 81m below the surface and stretches from Cala Mesquida in Mallorca to Ciutadella de Menorca. We at Euro Weekly News understand that the reported cost of the project is estimated to be €84 million. Red Eléctrica, the company entrusted with the project, explained that the link will improve the security and quality of the electricity supply, maximising renewable energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which will facilitate energy transition in the entire Balearic Islands.
