Young woman’s death in Tenerife suspected gender-based violence

THE death of a 26-year old woman in Tenerife in the early hours of Monday could turn out to be gender-based violence, ironically coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Guardia Civil arrested a 29-year old man after receiving an emergency call out at around 6.30am.

When officers got to the woman’s home in Granadilla de Abona they reportedly found the suspect with cuts to his hands and the woman with her throat cut.

The Guardia immediately called out the emergency health services, but it was too late to save the young woman’s life.

If this is confirmed as a gender violence crime it would make the 26-year old the 52nd woman to die at the hands of her partner or former partner in Spain so far this year
