NEWS IN SPAIN: Homophobic attack launched on man at nightclub in Andalusia

A MAN has has filed a complaint with the National Police after allegedly being subjected to a homophobic assault at a nightclub in Seville in Andalusia, Spain.

The incident occurred around 5.45am on November 24, when the 35-year-old victim went to use the toilet at the venue. It was here that he was approached by a male who threw him a barrage of insults in relation to his sexual orientation.

The complainant reported that when he tried to leave the toilets, the man blocked his way out, giving him a strong punch in the face. We at Euro Weekly News understand that both men were then removed from the premises by security guards, where the assailant fled and the victim was taken to Virgen Macarena University Hospital where doctors determined that he had a broken nose.

Sylvia Rivera, President of the Association of Transsexuals of Andalusia, has condemned the homophobic attack, asking that the perpetrator is found and that he is charged “to guarantee the rights, equal treatment and non-discrimination of the LGTBI community in Andalusia.”

She added that these types of attacks which are fuelled by people in the media “target the most vulnerable groups such as immigrants, women, homosexuals and transsexuals.” She believes that it is therefore a “political responsibility to ensure the law is applied so that these people feel protected”.
