A SERIAL shoplifter banned from every shop in England except a Tesco supermarket has been arrested by police after allegedly stealing a sandwich from Greggs.
Anna Burns was taken into custody on Saturday, November 30, just two weeks after she was bailed by a judge at Swindon Crown Court despite her history of thieving and failure to turn up in court.
As part of her conditions, Burns was not allowed to go into any shops except for a Tesco Metro in Swindon and a walk-in NHS pharmacy. Despite that order, she went into Caffé Nero, Lush, Polish food market Delikatesy Smaczek and Greggs over the weekend where she was reportedly caught stealing a £6.50 sandwich.
Burns appeared in court on Saturday where she admitted to breaching her bail conditions but denied four counts of shoplifting. She claimed she had taken an overdose of sleeping pills that day and subsequently had no memory of the events.
Burns will face trial at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on December 23 and is already due in court this Friday to be sentenced for previous offences. These include a treasure trove of goods stolen in Swindon such as a mascara from Boots, two watches from Argos, Mothercare clothing worth £72 and food worth £55.40 from Costa Coffee. She has also pled guilty in the past for stealing £307-worth of goods from Marks and Spencer and £40-worth of food from Sainsbury’s.
On each occasion she was bailed by a judge on condition that she co-operated with the probation service in the compilation of her pre-sentence report.
