THE CARDIOVASCULAR Surgery service of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, belonging to the Heart Unit, has obtained a certificate of excellence for its practice of implantation of pacemakers granted by the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Each year, more than 250 cardio-stimulation devices are implanted in this centre and this year they celebrated a total of 10,000 pacemakers implanted since 1975. The head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Fernando Calleja, has stated that this distinction means “recognizing the maximum level of capacity both to implant pacemakers and to address the problems that may arise from implants.” And added, “Only the teams formed by cardio-surgeons have the capacity and infrastructure necessary to solve the most serious problems that can occur after an implant”.
