RESIDENTS in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, have launched a campaign to demand that the city council builds a car park at the Pere Garau market before they pedestrianise Carrer Nuredduna. Paquita Bonnín, who works at the market and is firmly behind the initiative, explained that the group are not against making the street vehicle-free, but that parking will boost trade and push residents to shop more frequently. Palma City Council are currently planning their pedestrianisation project on Carrer Nuredduna, which will take away some 500 parking spaces once the work is completed. However, in Bonnín’s view, this move will signify the end of Pere Garau, as a lack of places for customers to park their car plays a big factor on trade. Speaking on behalf of the campaign, Bonnín states that many residents who work at Pere Garau market are angry at the council as they made the decision to pedestrianise the street without asking for their input – something which the Council promised if projects posed an impact to trade. Bonnín urges residents to sign the petition which will be made available at the market until January of next year and will then be presented to Palma City Council.
