THE national government is currently studying what would be the best defence system for Vera Playa’s beaches, the acting head of the Ministry for Ecological Transition’s Almeria Provincial Service head has told the Euro Weekly News.

Enrique Lopez Ramirez said the study of this part of the coast is being carried out with the aim of deciding what would be the most appropriate measures to adopt. He revealed that various possibilities are being looked at, including that of constructing a large groin in the Garrucha port area.

Lopez Ramirez also told EWN he was unable to say when the study would be concluded as no specific completion date had been set.

Recent stormy weather saw Vera’s beaches hammered once again by high seas. The waves come right up to the back of the beaches, leaving the sand in a sorry looking state.

The storms prompted renewed calls from some local residents and business people for something to be done to protect the municipal coastline more effectively.
