NINE international cycling teams are currently training in Calpe for next season’s big road races.
Many are classed as Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Teams, the maximum category for international cyclists who compete in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España.
Teams now in Calpe include the top Spanish team, Movistar, Belgian team Deceuninck Quick Step, Groupama FDJ and Cofidis, both from France, Sunweb from Germany and Astana from Kazakhstan.
In addition, there are two French teams- Arkea-Samsic and Direct Energie- and the Belgian Wallonie Bruxelles that both belong to the Continental category, equivalent to the Second Division.
In recent years Calpe has become a favourite destination for leading cycling teams who are in training for next year’s big races. This is due to Calpe’s good weather, excellent roads with steep ascents that include the Coll de Rates and Aitana mountain passes.
There is also a wide range of hotels that specialise in accommodating cyclists, many of which have areas set aside for storing bicycles, specialised mechanics on call and even buffet meals designed to meet the cyclists’ dietary needs.
