Peace Light of Bethlehem arrives in Gibraltar

IN 1986 an Austrian charity inaugurated the concept of raising funds for handicapped children by lighting a flame in Bethlehem and bringing it back to Austria as a gesture of peace and goodwill.

When Austria became a member of the European Union, it was decided to bring the Peace Light of Bethlehem to Strasbourg to hand the flame over to the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the city itself.

Then in 2007 a delegation of guides and scouts from Austria, Germany, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian National Authority together lit the Peace Light in Bethlehem and since then it has been transferred around the world by members of those two youth groups.

Once again it has been delivered to Gibraltar by local scouts and was accepted on behalf of the government and people by Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia.
