EL CAMPELLO has joined a network of municipalities promoting the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, and which the local authority hopes will also encourage visits to the area.
The council decided to join the initiative overseen by the Agencia Nacional de Salud y Dieta Mediterranea (the National Health and Mediterranean Diet Agency) following a proposal from El Campello Tourism councillor Marisa Navarro.
Navarro, along with El Campello Mayor Juanjo Berengue, attended a recent act staged in Mutxamel to present a campaign promotional video and the participating municipalities.
Among the localities which have already signed up are Elche, Torrevieja, Denia and Ibi, as well as El Campello. Mutxamel and Sant Joan are set to join.
El Campello council explained the network aims to spread the word about the rich variety of a diet classified by UNESCO World Heritage as one of the healthiest in the world.
“We are in a land which produces the healthy foodstuffs, and it is very interesting to link this wealth with tourism because our offer is very attractive and can attract visitors from all over the world”, the Mayor commented.
The Tourism councillor explained that becoming part of the network meant participating in physical and online promotions programmed by the Diputacion de Alicante and by the provincial Chamber of Commerce, “positioning El Campello as a prime destination for enjoying this diet.”
Also attending the gathering in Mutxamel were the Alicante Chamber of Commerce president Juan Bautista Riera and provincial Economic Development and Productive Sector deputy Sebastian Cañadas, who is also the mayor of the host municipality.
“By eating healthily we enjoy a much longer and happier life, and in this land we have the highest quality products”, Cañadas remarked.
A scientific committee and the chefs Dani Frías and Pablo Montoro are participating in the network as well as local authorities.
