THE Guardia Civil has uncovered an abhorrent act of animal cruelty, after a man carried out an ‘unnecessary home amputation’ on his dog’s leg in Pontevedra, Spain.

The horrifying discovery was made when residents in Moaña noticed a frightened pooch struggling to walk near to the Junquera beach on January 2. Several concerned individuals then decided to act, running after the dog and gently holding him down in a bid to stop him being run over by a car. The local Nature Protection Service was then called.

Once at the scene, specially trained animal handlers took the bandage off the dog’s leg and found a gaping wound, determining that the dog had recently had his leg amputated. They strongly suspected that the procedure had not been professionally made as there was severe inflammation and infection.

The injured animal was then taken to a nearby vet, where the animal’s microchip was scanned, with the Guardia Civil being notified. Officers then proceeded to the property listed on the chip and upon questioning the owner, he admitted that he had carried out the amputation himself. When asked the exact reasons why he did it, he couldn’t provide any meaningful answer, apart from the dog had hurt his leg.

As reported by officers working on the case, the man has been charged with animal abuse and the dog is being cared for by a vet due to his serious need for medical treatment. As Euro Weekly News understands, the dog will then be taken to an animal shelter where it is hoped that the pooch will be adopted into a loving home.
