INCREASED POPULATION: More Benidorm residents registered on municipal rolls. Photo credit: Brett Hodnett
THERE has been a 1,163 upsurge in the number of residents on Benidorm’s Padron. A total of 811 Britons living in Benidorm registered between January and November in 2019, which municipal sources attributed to Brexit. As the UK prepares to shut the door on Europe at the end of this month, many British residents have taken the insistent advice of the British embassy and consulate and registered on the municipal Padron in order to retain the same rights as before. The introduction of parking permits for several Benidorm neighbourhoods has also prompted residents of all nationalities to register, as permits are issued only those who appear on the Padron. Benidorm now has an official population of 68,721 although the townhall’s hopes eventually to increase this to 75,000, a figure that will put it inline for more cash from the central government in Madrid.
