TEEN SUICIDE: teenager found hanged at school after she was told she was banned from returning home to Hong Kong

An 18-year-old schoolgirl was found hanged at her £33,000-a-year boarding school where Chinese pupils were stopped from returning home over Coronavirus fears.

Hei Tung Chan, who is known by the name of Joy, was one of dozens of pupils from Hong Kong banned from going home for half-term from their British school.

Joy died at hospital in Abergavenny, Wales, after being found at Monmouth School for Girls by a teacher 4 days prior.

On Tuesday, an inquest heard doctors pronounced Joy ‘brain-stem dead’ after she was taken to the intensive care unit.

It remains unclear whether she wanted to go back home or if her death was connected to the ban.

The head of the school, Jessica Miles, said Ms Chan, was a ‘lovely, warm and talented student.

She said “We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our students.
