ONCE again, Estepona held a competition to add 10 more murals to the sides of buildings in the town and attracted 104 entrants, nearly 50 per cent more than those who entered the first competition. Artists from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, South Africa and Uruguay plus many from across Spain took part and the 10 designs considered to be the best have been chosen by the jury. The artists will start work on the 10 projects on March 1 and must finish no later than March 10, when the final judging will take place with the first prize of €10,000 and the runner-up will win €5,000. Part of the excitement of the event is that it is true street art with members of the public able to watch the genesis of the creation over the 10 days. The Estepona Route of Artistic Murals has become a tourist attraction in its own right and is achieving fame around Spain and the world.
