Drivers were reported to witness a horrendous crash, which took place on the M6 towards Manchester.
Manchester Fire Service we’re called at 1.53pm Friday, to reports of a collision on the M60 towards Manchester City.
A spokesperson for Manchester fire service reported that crews attended a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.
“Nobody was trapped but North West Ambulance attended and took three people to hospital.”
A spokesperson for NWAS said: “We attended with two air ambulances, three ambulances a rapid response vehicle and advanced paramedic.
Two children were taken to hospital aged six and ten with serious injuries, while two other patients were treated at the scene.
It was later reported that a silver BMW collided with a highways maintenance vehicle which was stationary on the hard shoulder.
GMP said “Two boys, aged six and ten, who were in the BMW, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Sadly, the 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
A six year-old boy also in the car has suffered serious injurues.
The driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.”
A woman in the stationary vehicle received minor injuries.
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family at this terrible time.
“Our officers are currently piecing together the circumstances of the collision and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed it, or who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
The road remains closed as police continue out their enquiries into the crash.
