Spain car sales drop due to declining consumer confidence

Car sales across all segments in the Spanish market dropped last month, according to data published by three car associations ANFAC (manufacturers), Faconauto (concessions) and Ganvam (sellers). All three associations attribute last month’s decline to customer ‘lack of confidence’ to make a new car purchase.

In the first two months of this year, car sales in Spain dropped by 6.8%, compared to the year before, achieving total sales of 181,063 units. Individual purchases for the month of February 2020 fell by 11% and corporate registrations declined by 2%, compared to the same period last year.

Approximately 55.6% of auto purchases were petroleum powered cars, followed by diesel (28%). Nissan Quashqai was the top selling car model last month, selling some 2,550 units – albeit 25.22% less than the same period last year. Seat registered the most cars, delivering some 8,556 units – a slight increase of 1.86%, compared to the same period last year.

Sales of industry vehicles and buses also declined by 5.5% in February 2020, compared to the same period last year, selling around 1, 940 units. However, motorbike registrations increased a whopping 19.3%, totalling 12,825 units, compared to the same period last year, according to the national motorbike association (Anesdor).
