As the Coronavirus spreads in the Costa Del Sol, food shoppers are witnessing new levels of panic buying.

Facebook group Coronavirus in Andalucia – Expats Group reports that in just the past hour, Mercadona in Alhaurin El Grande has apparently been “decimated due to people panic buying”.  The same was seen in another Mercadona near Churriana recently.

Reports from individuals in the group report other areas affected including Antequera, Calahonda, Mijas Costa, Torrequebrada, Algarrobo, Coin, Ronda and Estepona.

One member commented that “people are just making this awful situation worse” signing off with a “keep calm folks”. Another group member advised “local shops have everything.  Thankfully Spain makes or produces nearly everything anyway so we won’t need to buy in from other countries”.  She advises to “adapt recipes to local seasonal veggies”.

A charitable lady in the group recounts that she “bought extra supplies for the food bank in Nerja” but was worried she looked like a “panic buyer”.  According to more recent comments in the past few minutes, shops including Mercadona, Lidl & Aldi are restocking as rapidly as they can.
