The Tokyo Metropolitan Govenment has said today they will postpone the opening ceremony of the Olympic aquatics center due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The opening ceremony had been organised for March 22nd. The Olympic Games are due to start on July 24th, 2020.
Trump had suggested that the 2020 Olympics held in Japan should be postponed for a year. Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said “I am aware of President Trump’s comments but we are working closely with the International Olympic Commitee, the organising committee and Tokyo in preparing for the Games as planned”.
Trump shifted his tone after a call with Prime Minister Abe and praised Japanese preparations for the Summer Olympics saying there were still “lots of options” for holding the Games.
With the Aquatics Center opening now postponed it looks increasing likely the Japanese Government may take Trump’s advice. For now Prime Minister Abe is standing firm saying that he wants to “win the battle with coronavirus and make this summer’s Olympics a success”.
