THE Calpe Cofradia de Pescadores (Fishing Guild) and part of its fleet continue to go out to sea. Traditional Calpe catches including whiting, red mullet, crabs, white prawns and octopus are still auctioned at the Lonja (fish market), assuring a supply of fresh fish not only locally but also for Alicante, Valencia and Elche. Guild sources stressed that it is up to primary sector’s farmers, growers and fishing industry to guarantee that the supply chain of fresh food continues to function and the population. “We are minimising risks as far as possible and adopting all preventive measures as strictly as all other professionals,” the Guild said.
