ALFAZ held its first ever Europe Day although it was a virtual celebration via video-conference owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It was ‘attended’ by representatives from all of Alfaz’s international groups and associations, the majority of whom are from European Union countries.
The occasional also saw the town’s first lockdown performance of the EU anthem, Ode to Joy, by the members of Alfaz’s Sociedad Musical La Lira.
The online event was open to all, with invitations sent to all who had previously emailed the town hall’s Other Nationalities department, explained councillor Martina Mertens.
Europe Day, on May 9, celebrates peace and unity throughout the continent and is the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration, the speech made in 1950 by France’s Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, proposing the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, which was eventually to become the European Union.
