An animal shelter ‘on the verge of collapse’ in La Nucia on the Costa Blanca is appealing for help rehoming ‘more animals than ever.’

THIS week La Nucía entered Phase 1 of de-escalation which allows the adoption of dogs and cats at the municipal Refugio de Animales de La Nucia.
And there are currently 130 dogs and 70 waiting to be rehomed.
Jessica Gommans, councillor for Animal Protection, said: “Unfortunately during the State of Alarm the abandonment of dogs has continued with the handicap that the adoption service could not be restarted, due to the lack of mobility of people.
“This has caused the animal shelter to have more dogs than ever before, close to collapse.
“Now that we can move with restrictions in Phase 1, people can come to the shelter to adopt, always with a previous appointment, and give a second chance to these abandoned dogs and cats.”
Appointments can be made by calling 648 100 640, and visitors must respect the rules of protection and security established at the shelter.
The shelter’s voluntary dog walking has also been resumed, coordinated by the Animal Protection Society of La Nucia, which manages the shelter.
The shelter is open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 1pm and from 4pm to 6pm, and on Saturday from 10am to 1pm.
Established in November 2006, the large number of animals rescued over the 14 years has led to eight extensions financed by the La Nucía Town Hall, to improve the service.
