Spain’s Malaga Mayor urges ‘caution’ in Phase 1 of de-escalation on Costa del Sol to benefit from ‘economic opportunity’ & boost the hospitality industry

The mayor of Malaga Francisco de la Torre has urged “caution” on the part of all citizens as the province moves to Phase 1 of de-escalation on Monday May 18.

IT’S an opportunity for our economy to recuperate and help reactivate the hospitality industry, according to the mayor. In a Twitter post today, De la Torre stated: “Everyone must exercise extreme caution, and behave as if we all are infected in order to protect those around us. That means maintaining social distances and the recommended hygiene measures to reinforce a safe image of Malaga.”

He reiterated that “all residents must continue to respect the health and safety measures introduced by the government” to stop the Covid-19 contagion from spreading, as this will help the economy to “recuperate quicker and for normality to return sooner.”

Malaga Town Hall has given the hospitality industry permission to double the size of their outside patio areas (as reported) to help reactivate their businesses. Bars and restaurants will be allowed to serve customers up to 50 per cent of terrace capacity from Monday May 18. There are around 8,000 bars and restaurants in Malaga, which employ some 30,000 staff in the province, and De la Torre hopes these measures will go some way towards boosting economic activity and protecting jobs in the hospitality sector.
