Spain’s Minister of Transport Confident About Reactivating Tourism by End of June: “We Need to Make Spain An Attractive Destination”

Jose Luis Abalos, the Minister of Transport, has expressed his confidence in reactivating the tourism sector by the end of next month, June, which should coincide with the final phases of the de-escalation plan in a majority of Spain’s territories. He has noted that “we need to make Spain an attractive destination after this crisis.”

ABALOS has recognised the necessity that the government holds in fomenting tourism, especially in the archipelago regions, as these are areas which are heavily reliant upon foreign tourism markets. Although they are at an advantage in having relatively good epidemiological situations, they are also at a significant disadvantage as they have lost their main source of income, tourism.

The Minister of Transport has appeared confident that the rest of parliament will support the last and final extension of the State of Alarm, which if approved will endure for an extra month. More than an enforcement of quarantine, this State of Alarm tries to control mobility between provinces which is “what will most benefit the propagation of the virus. We are at the last hurdle, which must rally the support of all parliamentary groups,” he firmly stated.

When questioned about the relationship between the Community of Madrid and the Central Government he has emphasised that the capital was in fact the epicentre of the entire crisis in Spain, therefore it makes no sense and would not be fair for this territory to pass onto Phase 1 at the same velocity as the rest of the country who has seen incomparable progress.

Abalos has asked that the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso dedicate her time to thinking how “to improve things rather than deteriorate” the situation at hand. He has compared her behaviour to that of Catalonia’s who have been more sensible and not requested to pass onto Phase 1 as their health situation has also been one of the worst affected.
