Online shopping giant Amazon has announced plans to create at least 7,000 permanent jobs in its UK warehouses.
AS high street retailers across the UK announce staff lay-offs, Amazon UK is hiring. During the lockdown, people took to online shopping in a big way as they couldn’t visit their local stores. Even as restrictions were lifted, the surge in online shopping continued apace. This lead to some jobs at Amazon ‘fulfilment centres’ being upgraded from temporary to full-time permanent ones.
Although this is very welcome news for the UK, it does not approach the number of jobs lost in the retail sector over the last few months. Almost every major high street retailer has either laid off staff or closed stores, or both. The latest figure for job losses in the retail industry in the UK was a staggering 45,000! As the crisis continues and the government’s furlough scheme nears an end it is feared this could escalate – some industry insiders think to twice that amount.
Amazon Spain also recently announced it will create more than 2,000 jobs, again this figure will be offset by many retail stores across the country closing with thousands of job losses.
