World Mental Health Day 2020

World Mental Health Day 2020

Mental Health for All

Every year on October 10 the World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health day and this year the theme is Mental Health for All.

The campaign was first launched on October 10, 1992, as a programme of the World Federation for Mental Health.

The current global climate has seen an unprecedented effect on the mental health of the world’s population with conditions such as Anxiety, Depression and Stress on a steep increase as a direct result of the numerous restrictions placed on social norms such as isolation, fear, social distancing, lockdowns, uncertainty, etc.

The extreme distress caused by the coronavirus pandemic has seen people of all ages and backgrounds suffer as a result.

Prior to the wide spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the globe was already seeing a dramatic uptick in issues relating to poor mental health. Approximately 450 million people live with mental disorders globally and it is suggested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that these are prerequisite to a large number of other illnesses with one in every four people suffering from a mental health disorder at some point in their life.

This year’s programme is entitled Mental Health for All and aims to promote mental health assistance as an accessible and free resource at the point of need for all people.
