German Health Minister tested positive for coronavirus

GERMAN Health Minister tested positive for coronavirus and has placed himself in home quarantine.

According to the Ministry of Health in Berlin, Jens Spahn, of the Christian Democrats (CDU) tested positive for coronavirus early Wednesday afternoon.

The Health Ministry reported that Spahn “so far has only developed cold symptoms”.

In the morning, the minister had participated in a cabinet meeting in Berlin, where Chancellor Angela Merkel was also present.

A government spokesperson said that all safety precautions were respected, including the wearing of protective masks and social distancing, so it is not expected that other ministers will have to self-isolate.

Spahn has been applauded for his calm handling of the virus and his support of tougher restrictions.

Tuesday saw the Alpine district of Berchtesgaden become the first area to return to strict lockdown.

On Saturday, German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier also went into quarantine following a positive coronavirus test from his bodyguard.
