Breaking News – Birmingham moving to Tier 3 lockdown

BREAKING NEWS – BIRMINGHAM and West Midlands moving to Tier 3 lockdown after ‘worrying’ increase in positive Covid cases.

Birmingham City Council leader Ian Ward confirmed on the morning of Thursday, October 29 that the city will move to a stricter Tier 3 lockdown following a ‘very worrying’ increase in coronavirus infections. The West Midlands will join them in Tier 3 following a huge surge in hospitalisations.

He said: “Case rate numbers are going up, and we have to do something more. We will be moving into Tier 3.”

The move comes as there are now more than 300 patients with coronavirus in hospital beds at University Hospitals Birmingham, including 34 fighting for life in intensive care.

According to reports from Birmingham Live, government leaders are locked in talks over support measures ahead of the move, which is said to be happening ‘imminently’.

“The government are firm on what is on offer (financially) – it will be on a par with the support offered to Greater Manchester and Liverpool region and elsewhere,” Mr Ward said.

The new restrictions will force hospitality venues to close and ban contact with people from different households and support bubbles.
