LOCALS are optimistic for the return of the species after the first Golden Eagle was spotted in the skies of Albox, Almeria.
Eagles and vultures are an impressive sight at any time, but the sight of large bird of prey in the distance draws thoughts automatically to a vulture when in the Albox area. Golden eagles had not been seen in the area for many years.
The golden eagle sighting has been confirmed as a young eagle and that leaves locals optimistic that the species has returned. There has also been an adult golden eagle now spotted in the same area.
Elena Jiménez, a graduate in Environmental Sciences tells us how to confirm that the bird of prey is indeed a golden eagle, and said, “When golden eagles are young, the first year they have very characteristic plumage. Looking at them from below they have two white wing spots that are very noticeable, and they also have a small white stripe on the tail.”
The Golden Eagle is a protected species and sightings have been reported to the authorities to help ensure the birds’ safety.
