POLICE investigation reveals that the monster fire in the EMT station in Valencia originated in a 20-year-old-bus
As part of an extraordinary meeting called on December 6 between the management of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Valencia, an investigation was launched into the December 5 fire which totally destroyed 16 busses and seriously damaged 10 others.
The president of EMT, Giuseppe Grezzi, and the newly appointed managing director, Marta Serrano,  met with personnel from the technical and operations area to analyze the impact of the fire, which originated in a twenty-year-old bus that was parked in the garages. The investigation revealed that the bus had passed the ITV in November 19 but was part of an ageing fleet which the EMT is gradually replacing over a 5 year period with more environmentally friendly models. Fifteen of the sixteen vehicles damaged in the fire were over 15 years old.
At the meeting, Grezzi was quizzed about insurance cover for the vehicles, and was pushed to provide an estimation of the cost of the damages.
‘The value of a car when it is bought is different from what it is at fifteen years old with 200,000 kilometres driven,” explained Grezzi. “The same happens with these affected buses, which had already been planned to withdraw after a fotracà’ of kilometres.”
