Gang charged foreign women to give babies Spanish nationality

The Guardia Civil became suspicious of the fact that a number of pregnant foreign women had entered Melilla before the borders with Morocco were closed and after giving birth, claimed that the fathers were local Spanish residents.

Officers realised that one man alone had supposedly fathered six children by five different women during the short period of time since lockdown.

Using DNA testing of the so-called fathers, officers discovered 36 babies who had been registered as having a Spanish father, were in fact not related to the men at all and it transpired that the mothers had paid between €1,000 and €3,000 to the men involved.

This particular scam has now been busted wide open.
