IN Estepona yesterday Sunday, January 24 after a chase involving Customs patrol boats in the afternoon around 2pm an alleged ‘narco’ semi-rigid vessel was apprehended. Those in it were arrested, however, in the accidental collision a man from the semi-rigid has died. It is understood the man is a resident of La Linea de la Concepcion. It’s understood the rest of the semi-rigid crew apprehended by Customs suffered minor, not life-threatening injuries. The Customs official described the boat as having three powerful outboard engines and these types of boats are prohibited due to their link with contraband narco smuggling. At the time of the accident, Customs boats were trying to arrest the ‘rogue’ vessel’s occupants. All these events happened in the waters surrounding La Linea De La Concepcion at the Campo de Gibraltar, and later in the waters off the coast of Estepona where the fatal accident occurred, and the boat was finally apprehended. Four people in total were sailing the vessel, including the person who died in the accident. The court of Estepona 4 will instigate a judicial investigation into the accident and hear evidence on the case. This court will also be responsible for the remains of the deceased. No injuries were reported by Customs officials or shore crew or by the Customs offices either in Estepona or La Linea De La Concepcion.
