ANDALUCIA prepares for an all-out war against the West Nile virus.
Andalucia is set for an all-out war against the virus and the Regional Ministry of Health and Families are working on preparations for a strategic plan which aims to reduce the diseases that can be transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes. Control of the West Nile Virus will be one of the priorities of the programme which is due to be launched in March.
Andalucia will be focusing on the Nile fever control programme as a priority as they prepare for emerging diseases due to ongoing globalisation and climate change. Last year the West Nile Virus claimed multiple lives in Spain.
The West Nile Fever programme will begin this month and will classify areas of Andalucia as low medium or high risk for the virus. This will enable authorities to carry out appropriate surveillance and preventative and control measures in order to control the impact of the disease.
The authorities will use data collected during last year’s outbreak to help them focus their efforts against the potentially deadly virus and its carriers. Key to the plan is the control of the number of mosquitoes and ticks in the area.
