MARIA ISABEL LOPEZ, currently Turre’s deputy mayor, could be barred from holding any public post for 12 years.
In 2018, when Lopez was mayor, she allegedly prevented a turron-seller from setting up his stall at the San Francisco fair in the same spot that his family had occupied since 1949.
The ex-mayor’s reasons were “arbitrary,” according to the Fiscal (Public Prosecutor) in her submission prior to Lopez’s November trial at the Almeria High Court.
Lopez knowingly contravened the way that stalls were habitually allocated at the fair, based on tradition and seniority, the Public Prosecutor maintained.
As well as being prevented from holding a public sector post for 12 years, Lopez will also, if found guilty, be ordered to pay compensation to stallholder.
