BARCELONA Thrash Athletic Club In Sevilla Final To Win The Copa Del Rey 2021

Barcelona travelled to Sevilla’s deserted Estadio de la Cartuja on Saturday night (April 17), to contest the final of the 2021 Copa del Rey with Athletic Club of Bilbao, and in a hectic spell that produced four goals in 13 second-half minutes, won the trophy for the 31st time in their history, but their first time since the 2017/18 season.

The Catalans were held at bay for the first 45 minutes by a very well drilled Athletic defence, but the second half was a very different affair as Griezmann slotted in a cross from De Jong to make it 1-0 after 60 minutes.

Still reeling from conceding the goal, Athletic were stunned again just three minutes later as De Jong stooped down to head home an Alba cross from the left to double Barca’s lead.

Ronald Koeman’s team was buzzing now, and on 68 minutes it had to be Lionel Messi, combining with De Jong to virtually pass the ball past Unai Simon and into the net for 3-0, and not content, Messi again latched onto a pass from Alba and hit a left-footed shot into the goal for the Argentinian’s second of the match, and 4-0, seeing Barcelona thrash the men from the Basque region.

Remarkably, this was Messi’s first Copa del Rey win as Barcelona captain, and on this kind of form, the fans will be hoping that new club president Joan Laporta can persuade their star player to stay at the Camp Nou next season, as reported by marca.com.
