THE council said there had been an increase in the number of scams relating to gas inspectors being carried out against the elderly.
According to Fuengirola Council, councillor for Consumer Affairs, Francisco Jose Martin, announced the news of the scams against the elderly.
He said: “It is important to remember that all the inspections of the installation of gas… in the home, are only done if the owner of the house requests them. Neighbours should not believe, in any case, any alleged installer who comes to their home, whether he warns them in advance or not, saying there is need for some kind of review.”
He added: “Different municipalities of the province are warning of an exponential increase in these cases of fraud where, for the most part, the elderly are victims. Therefore, we must keep in mind that officials only come if we notify him from the home itself.”
The politician said: “It is important to be aware of this situation if it occurs at any time. At the council we have a Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC) that serves all residents registered in Fuengirola in case they consider that they have been deceived in the provision of a service or that they have had a problem when carrying out some purchase.”
He added: “There are times when the OMIC does not have direct powers to formalise a complaint, but this body always offers some kind of help to consumers and is responsible for transferring the file to the competent body, so whenever a person from Fuengirola comes in, they will get some kind of answer.”
The news comes following reports of other scams involving the elderly on the Costa del Sol.
