MARBELLA will become the world capital of padel tennis throughout the month of June with the World Padel Tour (WPT) Marbella Masters 2021.
This will the first appointment on the calendar that includes different national and international competitions supported by the Marca Marbella program.
The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, who visited the courts on June 5, was accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Manuel Cardeña.
With 13 courts, the facilities in the north of the municipality, in the surroundings of the La Cañada Commercial Park, will see a number of different matches played.
According to the mayor “thanks to these events, hotel occupancy in the city is hovering around one hundred per cent” and the competition will last until June 13 with the Puente Romano Tennis Club as its headquarters.
“Once again we are showing that we respond very seriously when we host this type of competition”, she added, observing that in the coming weeks, from June 14 to 29, the Spanish Under 23 Championship and from June 28 to July 4, the XII European Championship will take place.
The European Championship which is biannual returns to Spain after 14 years and promises to attract some of the best names in the sport.
It is very appropriate that padel returns to Marbella as it was Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, founder of Marbella Club who built two courts in Marbella in the early 1970s and was probably the founder of the sport in Spain.
