SITTING on the front pew at the Cathedral of Saint Florian, Queen Sofia attended the funeral of royal friend in Liechtenstein on August 28.

It was a poignant return for the 82-year-old Spanish Queen Emeritus as she said farewell to her friend, Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, as she had attended her marriage to Prince Hans Adam II at the Vaduz Cathedral in 1967.

The 81-year-old Princess who was born in Prague died in the Grabs hospital in Switzerland on August 21, three days after she suffered a stroke.

The two royal families were close and this was born out by the fact that Queen Sofia sat at the very front of the Cathedral alongside the four children of Princess Marie: Crown Prince and Regent Alois (53), Prince Maximilian (52), Prince Constantin (49) and Princess Tatiana (48).

The coffin was draped in the Royal Family’s red and yellow flag and was decorated with a framed picture of Princess Marie, as well as mostly yellow flowers, among which a bouquet of red roses from her husband Prince Hans-Adam.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the State Funeral had to be televised as large crowds were not allowed near the Cathedral although the body of the Princess laid in State on the day before the funeral so that her people could pay their respects.

Following the funeral Queen Sofia attended a reception in honour of the late Princess at the Castle of Vaduz.
