Spain is top exporter of fresh lemons

Spain's lemon sales up by 20 per cent

After a bumper harvest Spain retains its position as the world’s top exporter of fresh lemons.

The 2020/2021 harvest of fresh lemons in Spain topped 1,340,000 tons. It’s the number one exporter of fresh lemons in the world, the top grower of the lemons in Europe and ranks second in the world in terms of processing the fruit.

The citrus sector in Spain is worth €2.5 billion per year on average. Citrus fruit accounts for 4.9 per cent of the Spanish agricultural sector and 32.5 per cent of all fruit grown in Spain. Spanish citrus growers harvest 60 per cent of total EU production, which places Spain as the main citrus producer in the EU.

Spanish production and export of citrus fruits are of crucial importance for the agri-food sector as a whole and have a direct impact on the rural economies in Spain.

Exports are made to 85 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom.

Lemons are grown across southern Spain and the sector employs roughly 20,000 people.
