People attending the DC Fandome virtual event on Saturday were treated to the first full trailer for “The Batman”, the latest film set in the gloomy city of Gotham. The clip is the first glimpse at Robert Pattinson taking up the famous black suit as he stars in what is apparently the ‘darkest and most violent’ outing yet. Fans have been anticipating the new version of the superhero and it did not disappoint.
The new film is set in the early days of Batman’s story, just one year after he begins his life as the Caped Crusader. Director Matt Reeves has turned Gotham into a dark and foreboding place and the fights Batman finds himself in are very violent. The main villain of this film is ‘The Riddler’ played by Paul Dano His face is hidden throughout the new Batman trailer which hints at a big reveal in the film.
The other main characters are Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz, and The Penguin, played by a ‘completely unrecognisable Colin Farrell. The film matches the comics with its portrayal of Catwoman as a very influential character in Batman’s life and is much more fleshed out in this movie. “I don’t want her to be an idea, you know, I want her to be a real human being in a real situation in a real city trying to survive and reacting to her own pain,” Kravitz said about the character in the Fandome panel. One of the main casting changes we see is that Michael Caine has left his role as the erstwhile butler, Alfred Pennyworth. He is replaced by Lord of the Rings star, Andy Serkis.
The film is due out in 2022.
