There was a dramatic incident in an Eredivisie clash in the Dutch football league this afternoon, Sunday, October 17, during the match between NEC Nijmegen and Vitesse, at the Goffertstadion.
After the whistle blew to end the match – with a 1-0 win to the away side – the Vitesse players ran to celebrate their victory in front of the section where their fans were standing.
At this point, the fans started jumping up and down, and the stand was seen to start moving, before collapsing totally under the weight of the fans. Several were seen falling, but thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries.
The Vitesse players were seen to be visibly stunned at the scene unfolding in front of them, but once it was clear that nobody was hurt in the incident, the celebrations continued.
This match is one of the biggest rivalries in Dutch football, with neither side wanting to lose this game. Danish striker Nikolai Baden put Vitesse in front after 16 minutes, and that is how it stayed until the end. This win moves his side up to 6th place in the Eredivisie, while NEC drops down into 11th.
Vitesse will play hosts to Premier League club Tottenham next Thursday, October 21, in the Europa League competition. With just three points in the group so far, the Dutch will be hoping for a win over their English opponents, after a 2-1 defeat to French side Rennes in their previous European group game.
